Rapid prototyping & user testing (STBP 7/7)
Because AR experiences are 3 dimensional, prototyping with real-life props helps understanding usability on a deeper level quickly.
Preparing for testing
I picked soft wire to quickly model a FOV window attached to the user’s head.
I used heavy sketch paper to model various screens and icons.
User Testing
Because comfort is a big challenge of any AR experience, I decided to test the interactions early on in the design process so I can iterate quickly.
Gazing control: minimize and expand the screen
Navigation icon position: visibility, size & angle
Setup workflow: identify gaps between each step
Feedback Summary
Gazing control
feels natural to the users
Screen size
can be as large as 36cm x36cm at 50 cm distance before users feel uncomfortable
Workflow
too much information is provided on each screen and some information is repetitive
user feels overwhelmed and unable to focus
Based on the feedback, I refined the user flow and the information presented.
My next post will include a demo of the final prototype and a summary of the different phases of the STBP project. Stay tuned!
