Rapid prototyping & user testing (STBP 7/7)

Because AR experiences are 3 dimensional, prototyping with real-life props helps understanding usability on a deeper level quickly.

Preparing for testing

I picked soft wire to quickly model a FOV window attached to the user’s head.

I used heavy sketch paper to model various screens and icons.

User Testing

Because comfort is a big challenge of any AR experience, I decided to test the interactions early on in the design process so I can iterate quickly.

Gazing control: minimize and expand the screen

Navigation icon position: visibility, size & angle

Setup workflow: identify gaps between each step

Feedback Summary

Gazing control

  • feels natural to the users

Screen size

  • can be as large as 36cm x36cm at 50 cm distance before users feel uncomfortable

Workflow

  • too much information is provided on each screen and some information is repetitive

  • user feels overwhelmed and unable to focus

Based on the feedback, I refined the user flow and the information presented.

My next post will include a demo of the final prototype and a summary of the different phases of the STBP project. Stay tuned!
